Introduction to the Fall River

The Fall River in the Deschutes National Forest fly fishing only river, located just outside of Bend, Oregon, is a spring-fed stream known for its clear waters and excellent year-round fly fishing opportunities. Its pristine environment provides a perfect setting for targeting rainbow, brook, and brown trout during the winter months.
ODF&W still runs a stocking program of rainbow and brook trout a couple time of years, but this river also boasts naturally reproducing brook, rainbow and brown trout.
The river is mostly open year round, however the stretch between the Falls and the Deschutes River is closed from September 30th to May 22nd to protect important spawning grounds.
Techniques for Success
The Fall River is ideal for trying various fly fishing techniques:
- Euro Nymphing: Highly effective in the clear waters of the Fall River, helping detect subtle strikes from rainbow trout.
- Dry Fly Presentations: Although less common in winter, be prepared for occasional surface activity, especially during warmer afternoons.
- Standard Indicator Nymphing: Great for fishing deeper pools and runs.
Hatches in January and February
During these months, the Fall River sees hatches of Blue Winged Olives, Saddle Caddis, Winter Stones, and midges. For subsurface action, focus on mayfly nymphs, stonefly nymphs, midge larva and sculpin patterns.
Understanding River Flows
The Fall River maintains a steady flow year-round due to its spring-fed source. Winter flows are typically stable, ensuring consistent fishing conditions. Always check the latest flow reports before your trip to ensure optimal conditions.

Targeting the Fall River Trout Trifecta
As this is a meandering crystal clear river you are going to want to be as stealthy as possible so we are talking 5x-6x tapered leader with 4x-6x fluorocarbon tippet when using a single hand fly rod for indicator or dry fly fishing. We recommend a 5WT rod for both.
For euro nymphing we still like to see 4x-6x tippet and a 3WT euro rod is ideal.
Additional Tips for Winter Fishing
- Dress warmly in layers to combat cold temperatures. Good layering beneath your waders is critical and we recommend:
- Use polarized sunglasses to reduce glare and spot fish more easily. We have every major brand of lenses for you to choose from!
- Be cautious of icy banks and slippery rocks. We think wading staffs are always a necessity, but especially in the winter season. This is not the time for falling in the river, and there ofter will be snow on the river banks which becomes very slick. We recommend the Simms Wading Staff due to its strength and reliability.
Conclusion
The Fall River offers a rewarding winter fly fishing experience with its active rainbow trout population and beautiful surroundings. By mastering various techniques and understanding the river's unique characteristics, you can enjoy a successful trip targeting rainbow trout.
