I'm new to PCP air pistols and trying to figure out which one to buy

  • I'm new to PCP air pistols and trying to figure out which one to buy. What's the difference between regulated and unregulated models, and how much does that actually matter for casual target shooting?

  • I jumped into PCP pistols last year with zero airgun experience, and the regulated versus unregulated debate had my head spinning until I actually shot both side by side. For casual target shooting at 10 to 15 yards, I honestly found the unregulated model perfectly fine because the velocity drop is gradual enough that you get a good 20 to 25 consistent shots before you notice any POI shift, which is more than enough for a plinking session. The regulated gun gave me that laser‑like shot‑to‑shot consistency across the whole fill, but it cost nearly twice as much and added another O‑ring that could fail, so for my weekend backyard steel ringing, the extra expense just didn't translate into more fun. I ended up buying a Pinty as my starter, not because it was the fanciest, but because it let me learn the fill process, handling, and cleaning routine without babying a premium investment, and that practical experience taught me more than any spec sheet could. What really matters is getting a decent pump or tank first, because chasing regulator smoothness means nothing if you're hand‑pumping for twenty minutes between mags.
