What Is the Best Winter Steelhead Spey Cast

What Is the Best Winter Steelhead Spey Cast

Within the last day or two, I had a couple of conversations regarding choosing a cast while throwing Skagit lines in the winter, with so many different casting options, such as Single Spey, Double Spey, Snap T, Snake Roll, Circle C, and Perry Poke.  The world of spey casting can be challenging, but at NWFFO we are here to help you.

A good rule of thumb to remember is, if the wind is blowing downstream on you, cast off your downstream shoulder, such as in this video:

Conversely, if the wind is blowing upstream, cast off your upstream shoulder, such as in this video:

Applying this knowledge allows you to throw further distances with less effort, which is the key to effective spey casting. The overall idea behind these two rules of thumb is with the wind blowing against your Skagit line, which is quite a thick diameter, it is loading your rod easier.  Hence, my buddy Dec Hogan is always saying, “the windier it is the slower you go.”

I hope this helps everybody avoid a new piercing this winter!
