August Stocking Report

It's officially August, which means it's time for our monthly update on what to expect and where to fly fish for stocked trout within three hours of Portland.

Stillwater Trout Fishing

August is one of the slowest months on ODFW's calendar every year. But most of our best and most accessible local fly fishing lakes have been stocked multiple times and will fish well throughout the remainder of the summer, so don't worry if your favorite hasn't been stocked recently — it will still be worth your time and effort. Harriet Lake and Trillium Lake are both scheduled for late-month plants, and Clear Lake on the McKenzie will see a fresh stock mid-month.

Stream Trout Fishing

You'll still see a solid mix of fish stocked into our local small streams this month. Breitenbush River, Upper North Santiam, and Fall River kick things off early in August, with McKenzie River and Salmon Creek following mid-month. Stocked trout in these environments tend to bunch up, so once you find a pod, it will be game on.

An important safety note: Pine Hollow Reservoir and Rock Creek Reservoir — both popular destinations for stocked trout — are in active wildfire zones and should be avoided entirely for your safety and the safety of first responders.

Low-elevation stocking efforts in Southern Washington are done for the summer season, so this month's report focuses exclusively on Oregon destinations. Remember, ODFW does not provide exact stocking dates, but rather a range of days. We have provided our own dates next to each Oregon waterbody. On or after those dates, these locations will hold stocked trout and should be fishing well.
