Northwest Fly Fishing Outfitters: Portland's Fly Shop Since 1992
"Make fly fishing more fun, easier to understand, and accessible to all."
Northwest Fly Fishing Outfitters has been Portland's home for fly fishing for over three decades. We're located at 10910 NE Halsey St, Portland, OR — and whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned angler, you'll find a genuinely welcoming place here.
Our Story
NWFFO was founded in 1992 by John, Shirley, and Jack Hagan — passionate anglers who saw a gap in the Pacific Northwest and set out to fill it. At a time when quality fly fishing shops were few and far between, they built something special: a community hub where anyone could walk in, get honest advice, and leave more excited about the sport than when they arrived.
For over three decades, the Hagans grew NWFFO into Portland's most trusted fly fishing destination. Three years ago, they passed the torch to the Golobay family — David, Dawn, Gabe, and Ethan — who purchased the business with one clear mission: to make sure NWFFO would be here to serve the Pacific Northwest fly fishing community for many more decades to come.
The Golobays are experienced business owners with deep roots in customer service, running heating, cooling, plumbing, and electrical businesses across the region. They bring that same customer-first philosophy to NWFFO every single day. In an era where private equity is consolidating independent businesses across the country, the Golobay family represents something different — local ownership, genuine community investment, and a belief that a great fly shop is about far more than selling gear.
What We Stand For
Fly fishing has historically carried a reputation for exclusivity — a sport for a certain kind of person, with a certain kind of background. We're working to change that. At NWFFO, we believe the rivers of the Pacific Northwest belong to everyone, and we've built our shop, our programs, and our community around that belief.
That means welcoming beginners without judgment, stocking gear for every budget, offering instruction that actually makes sense, and creating spaces where people who haven't always felt at home in the outdoors can find their footing — and their people.
Community Programs We're Proud Of
Ripple Effect Outreach
We believe fly fishing has the power to heal. Through Ripple Effect Outreach, NWFFO supports individuals battling substance abuse and mental health challenges by introducing them to fly fishing as a healthy, grounding pursuit. Time on the water has a way of putting things in perspective — and we've seen firsthand how transformative that can be.
Gills & Gals
Women are the fastest-growing segment in fly fishing, and Gills & Gals is our community built specifically for women and LGBTQ+ anglers in the Portland and SW Washington area. Through regular events, clinics, and a welcoming social community, Gills & Gals ensures that every woman who wants to fly fish has a place to belong and people to fish with.

"Hands down the best fly shop experience I've ever had. Walked in and was immediately greeted by Spencer, who was welcoming, easy to chat with, and really helpful when it came to talking about local spots to try. Very laid back vibe in the shop and you can tell they're making an effort to be a great resource to the community — both for those who have fly fished for years and those just starting out. Went just to check it out because I'm subscribed to their newsletter, and I'll definitely be going back!"

"I had a fantastic full-day float on the Trask River with Joseph as my guide. We got into a bunch of sea-run cutts, and Joseph made the entire experience top-notch. Joseph was well prepared, knowledgeable, and an excellent teacher. Beyond just putting me on fish, he was patient, helpful, and fun to spend the day with. You can tell he works hard to give his clients the best possible day on the water. Highly recommend him to anyone looking for a great guide trip."
