Classes & Instruction
Do I need any experience to take a fly fishing class?
Not at all. Our Intro to Fly Fishing class is designed specifically for complete beginners. We cover everything from gear selection and knot tying to casting technique and reading water — all in a relaxed, judgment-free environment.
Do you offer fly tying classes?
Yes! We offer both Intro to Fly Tying and Intermediate Fly Tying classes taught by expert author Jeff Morgan. Classes run as a three-week series and all materials are provided.
How do I get started with fly fishing?
The easiest way is to come visit us at the shop — we'll point you in the right direction based on your goals and budget. You can also register for our next Intro to Fly Fishing class, which runs monthly throughout the year.
Guided Trips
What rivers do you guide on?
Our guides fish a wide range of Oregon and SW Washington waters including the Deschutes, Clackamas, Sandy, Willamette, McKenzie, and more. View our full guided trip offerings here.
What species can I target in the Portland area?
The Pacific Northwest offers incredible variety. Depending on the season, you can target wild rainbow trout, steelhead, sea-run cutthroat, smallmouth bass, carp, and more — all within a short drive of Portland.
Gear & the Shop
Do you carry gear for women?
Yes — we stock a dedicated selection of women's fly fishing gear including waders, boots, and apparel from Simms and other top brands. We also host regular women's events and clinics through our Gills & Gals community.
Is NWFFO locally owned?
Yes — NWFFO is proudly family-owned and operated by the Golobay family. We are not affiliated with any private equity group or national chain. Our commitment is to this community, these rivers, and the anglers who love them.
Community Programs
What is Ripple Effect Outreach?
Ripple Effect Outreach is a non-profit program we support through the shop that introduces fly fishing to individuals recovering from substance abuse or navigating mental health challenges. We believe time on the water is genuinely healing, and we're proud to help make that accessible to people who need it most.
