Brown Trout

Brown trout are the most cunning and selective fish in the Pacific Northwest β and for many anglers, the most rewarding to catch on a dry fly. Introduced from Europe in the late 1800s, browns have established wild, self-sustaining populations across Oregon and Washington, thriving in cold, clear rivers where their wariness and size make them a true challenge for even experienced fly fishers.
Seasons & Prime Waters
Brown trout fishing peaks in the fall (September through November) when larger fish become aggressive and move into shallower water. Evening dry fly fishing during summer caddis and PMD hatches can be exceptional. Key PNW waters include:
- Metolius River β wild brown trout in a stunning spring creek setting; technical and rewarding
- Middle Deschutes River β browns mixed with redbands; best in fall
- Williamson River β trophy browns in Southern Oregon
- Oak Grove Fork β Small creek fishing between Lake Timothy and Lake Harriet
- Lake Harriet β A beautiful reservoir lake nestled at the foot of the Cascades
- East Lake
Recommended Gear
Brown trout demand precise presentations and quality gear. Our staff fishes these waters regularly and recommends what we trust on the water.
Rods
A 9-foot 5-weight handles most brown trout situations. For technical spring creek fishing on the Metolius or Crooked River, a 4-weight with a delicate tip is ideal. Fall streamer fishing for big browns calls for a 6 or 7-weight with a sink-tip line. Β Trout spey rods are also a great option for big streamers and big browns.
Reels & Lines
A smooth drag is critical when a large brown makes a run. Match a weight-forward floating line for dry fly and nymph work; add a sink-tip or full-sink line for streamer fishing in fall.

Leaders & Tippet
Brown trout are leader-shy. Use long, fine leaders β 12-foot 5X or 6X for dry fly fishing. Fluorocarbon tippet is essential for nymphing and streamer work in clear water.
Waders & Boots
Breathable waders and quality wading boots are a must for PNW rivers. Felt soles provide superior grip on the slick basalt common on the Deschutes and Metolius.
Flies That Work
Brown trout are selective feeders β matching the hatch matters. Our staff picks:
Dry Flies
Elk Hair Caddis, Parachute Adams, PMD Sparkle Dun, X-Caddis, Pale Evening Dun
Nymphs
Pheasant Tail, Hare's Ear, Copper John, Soft Hackle Emerger, Zebra Midge
Streamers
Woolly Bugger (olive/black), Sculpzilla, Slumpbuster, Articulated Leech β especially effective for large browns in fall
