Rainbow trout are the heartbeat of Pacific Northwest fly fishing. From the wild redband populations of the Deschutes to the trophy fish of the Metolius, Oregon and Washington offer some of the finest rainbow trout fishing in the world — and NWFFO has been putting anglers on these fish for over 33 years.
Seasons & Prime Waters
Rainbow trout can be targeted year-round in the PNW, but the best dry fly fishing typically runs April through October when hatches are most active.
Be sure to check your regulations because many rivers west of the Cascades close at the end of October and the Deschutes at Warm Springs closes at the end of the year and doesn’t open again until the end of April.

Rods
A 9-foot 5-weight is the workhorse for most PNW rainbow trout fishing. For technical spring creek fishing like the Metolius, a 4-weight with a delicate presentation is ideal. For big water like the Deschutes, a 6-weight gives you the reach and power to handle wind and larger fish.
Reels & Lines
A quality large-arbor reel with a smooth drag paired with a weight-forward floating line covers 90% of rainbow trout situations. Add a sink-tip for swinging wets in faster water.

Leaders & Tippet
For dry fly fishing, a 9-foot 4X or 5X leader is standard. Drop to 6X on technical water like the Metolius. Fluorocarbon tippet is our preference for nymphing.
Waders & Boots
Breathable waders and felt or rubber-soled wading boots are essential for PNW rivers. Felt soles offer superior grip on slick basalt — common on the Deschutes and McKenzie.
