Sage Fly Rods & Reels

Why We Carry Sage at Northwest Fly Fishing Outfitters
Sage has been building fly rods and reels on Bainbridge Island, Washington since 1980 — right here in the Pacific Northwest, on the same island where they started with six employees and 1,500 square feet. Today they’ve grown to 175 employees in a 30,000 square foot facility, but the ethos has never changed: Perfecting Performance. Sage designs specialty products for specialty anglers, and that singular focus shows in every rod and reel they produce. We carry Sage because they represent the pinnacle of American fly fishing craftsmanship, and because their commitment to performance, innovation, and stewardship of the waters we fish aligns with everything we stand for at NWFFO.
Sage Fly Rod Series
Sage R8 Fly Rods
The R8 is Sage’s current flagship freshwater rod, built with their proprietary KonneticHD Technology for unmatched recovery speed, accuracy, and feel. An extraordinarily versatile rod that excels in a wide range of trout fishing situations — from technical spring creeks to big western rivers.
Sage Payload Fly Rods
Built for anglers who need to move heavy flies and sink tips in big water, the Payload is Sage’s purpose-built streamer and indicator rod. A powerful, fast-action tool for serious PNW steelhead and trout fishing.
Sage Sonic Fly Rods
The Sonic is Sage’s high-performance mid-range rod — fast action, lightweight, and built for anglers who want Sage quality at a more accessible price point. A capable all-around rod for a wide range of freshwater applications.
Sage ESN Fly Rods
Purpose-built for Euro nymphing, the ESN (Euro Sense Nymphing) is one of the finest tight-line nymphing rods available. Incredibly sensitive, perfectly balanced, and designed to detect the subtlest takes on PNW rivers.
Sage Spey & Switch Fly Rods
Sage has been at the forefront of Spey rod design for decades, working with some of the finest two-handed casters in the world. Their Spey and switch lineup covers everything from compact switch rods for smaller rivers to full Spey rods built for big water steelhead and salmon — the kind of fishing we have right here in the Pacific Northwest.
Sage Saltwater Fly Rods
Sage introduced their first saltwater-specific rods in 1989 and has been setting the standard ever since. Fast, powerful, and built to handle the demands of saltwater environments, Sage saltwater rods are trusted by guides and serious anglers around the world.
Sage Fly Reels
Sage has been designing and manufacturing fly reels since the introduction of their 500 Series in 1984, and they’ve been pushing reel innovation ever since. Sage pioneered the use of carbon in drag systems — a far superior material that is durable, consistent, lightweight, and reliable — and their reels continue to set the standard for precise drag control and thoughtful engineering. The same “form follows function” philosophy that drives their rod design drives every reel they build.
Sage Fly Rod & Reel Warranty
Sage backs every new rod and reel purchased through an authorized dealer with an original owner warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Here’s what you need to know:
- What’s covered: Defects in materials and workmanship for the original owner. Sage will repair or replace the product at their discretion, and may substitute comparable models for discontinued products.
- Unconditional lifetime warranty: Rods with serial numbers beginning with Q, R, S, or T carry an unconditional original owner lifetime warranty — the strongest coverage Sage offers.
- Standard warranty: Rods with serial numbers beginning with “A” and higher (including AA, AB, AC, etc.) are covered under the standard original owner warranty against defects.
- What’s not covered: Misuse, neglect, normal wear, fire, theft, lost or missing rod sections, intentional breakage, and modification or customization of a finished rod.
- Out-of-warranty repairs: Breakage outside of warranty coverage may be eligible for a fee-based repair or replacement. Sage will contact you with options after their technicians complete their inspection.
- How to return: The original owner must send the complete product, including all broken parts, freight paid and insured to Sage’s Bainbridge Island facility. Start the process through Sage’s online repair form.
